VAT Registration Guide

VAT Registration Guide A practical Orion Moon guide for South African business owners.

VAT registration depends on the value and nature of taxable supplies, not simply total money received. A business should test its historical and expected taxable turnover against the current compulsory and voluntary registration rules before applying.

Prepare a defensible application

Separate standard-rated, zero-rated, exempt and non-business receipts when calculating taxable turnover.
Prepare registration documents, bank evidence, business-address records, invoices, contracts and turnover schedules requested for the applicant.
Choose an accounting and invoicing process that can produce valid tax invoices and retain input-tax evidence from the effective date.
Plan pricing and cash flow before adding VAT, especially where customers cannot claim input tax or pay on extended terms.

After registration

Confirm the effective date and filing category, update invoices and quotations, reconcile output and input tax, submit VAT201 returns and retain the supporting transaction-level audit trail.
